Alicia’s Studio gets on Zoom with artist Ineffa Lucas to talk about what sparked his passion for music, his latest single, and his upcoming album that will be release this month

A Conversation with Ineffa Lucas

Alicia: Okay we can go ahead and start!

Ineffa Lucas: Hello my name is Ineffa Lucas I’m a musician living in New Zealand and yeah *laughs*

Alicia: Your music journey has been quite the eventful one, can you tell me where it all began and what made you go with the music path?

Ineffa Lucas: So growing up I was always doing music because I grew up in a musical family. My mother was a piano teacher so I was living that Korean life.  I have been playing the piano since I was three or four.

Ineffa Lucas: When I was just about finishing high school I wanted to start writing my own music and I wanted to write my own lyrics. I wanted to get my story out there. I wanted to be cool like the other artists I look up to. It started as a hobby but it became a full-time thing.

Alicia: Going into your release ‘Crybaby’  with fellow artist Jimmy brown. How was it collaborating with him?

Ineffa Lucas: He’s amazing! He’s a very good person to work alongside with. I think that I personally improved a lot working with him. He was always giving very useful feedback to me whether it was to help with improving my verse or my hook and I think that’s what made the song so amazing. I’m really happy with how it turned out too.

Alicia: Yeah it’s a great song by the way!

Ineffa Lucas: Thank you so much!

Alicia: What is the story behind your recent release of ‘Crybaby’?

Ineffa Lucas: So ‘Crybaby’ is not a personal story but it’s one of those stories I imagined. It’s a story about a boy having to leave because of the circumstances he was in. ‘Crybaby’ is a story that tells the girl he was leaving that he cared about her and that he really loved her. He was really connected with her and was telling her not to be sad and that he wanted her to be happy.

Alicia: With this new release did you have any difficulties when it came to recording or creating the track?

Ineffa Lucas: The difficulty I think was when it came down to expressing the emotions that weren’t my own. It’s always kind of difficult trying to express emotions about a made-up story or a story from your imagination. When it’s not my own story it’s hard to express the emotions through the music so I think that was the toughest challenge because everything else was pretty smooth.

Ineffa Lucas: I had a lot of fun making it and I’m sure Jimmy did as well!

Alicia: Genre wise what would you say is the genre you're aiming for?

Ineffa Lucas: I think the genre that I’m aiming for is more in the R&B or Pop area. I really like rock music so I’m trying to dig into rock music as well.

Alicia: When it comes down to goals as an artist what would you say your goals are for this year and the future?

Ineffa Lucas: So this year I actually have an album coming out soon. It’s a full-length album so that’s currently my main focus. I don’t like to set goals too far away but currently, my main focus is the album coming out later this month.

Alicia: Oo okay I can’t wait!

Ineffa Lucas: Yeah I’m pretty excited for this year actually!

Alicia: That's good to hear

Alicia: As an artist what would you say has been your greatest accomplishment so far?

Ineffa Lucas: I’m not too sure if there's anything I could be super proud of yet. I think a lot is coming and I think there will be a lot that I will be very very happy and proud of myself about. I don't think there's anything specific that I could say right now. I have done a lot of things that I’m happy with but I think most of it is yet to come.

Alicia: When creating music what does the process look like for you?

Ineffa Lucas: I personally like watching a lot of movies. I get a lot of inspiration from watching movies. I heard other artists get inspiration from other people's music or reading books but I get a lot of mine from watching movies.

Ineffa Lucas: I like getting the base of the storyline from other characters. I’ll usually come up with the story and base the lyrics on that story. I work with a very very talented team who make my beats for me and then I write and record to it and then send it off for mixing and mastering.

Alicia: Diving deeper into the creative process. What would you say is the hardest part of creating music for you and How long does it usually take you to write a song?

Ineffa Lucas: The biggest challenge for me is trying to get into the zone of writing and recording. So one day I would be really happy with my voice so I’m like “damn I need to write and record today”.

Ineffa Lucas: When I’m in the zone I could probably make a song per day. I think trying to get into to the zone of writing and recording is the hardest part. I believe it’s quite important to force yourself and to keep practicing writing and recording while you're not in the zone as well. But I think that is quite a challenge and it is quite difficult.

Alicia: When it comes down to musical inspiration do you have any group or artist you get inspiration from?

Ineffa Lucas: So I really really enjoy listening to a lot of DPR Ian’s music

Alicia: I love DPR Ian. Oo okay !!

Ineffa Lucas: Yeah DPR Ian he has a very cool identity as an artist and his music is something I really like. It’s just very rock and it’s very raw. It's the kind of music that I have been wanting to do for a while so I really enjoy listening to his music and I get a lot of inspiration from him.

Ineffa Lucas: I also would say Post Malone and I even got a lot of inspiration from Jimmy Brown before I worked with him so that was a very cool experience.

Alicia: As an upcoming artist, what would you like people to think when they hear “Ineffa Lucas”?

Ineffa Lucas: I personally think that an artist's character or identity is a very important thing for an artist's career. I don’t have anything specific that I want people to think of when they hear my name but I do want to have a very specific artist character or identity of what people would think of when they see or hear about me.

Ineffa Lucas: I don’t know what it is yet but that is my main goal. I wasn’t people to realize even maybe before I realize it myself.

Alicia: For future work is there any artist you would like to collaborate with or have on one of your next projects?

Ineffa Lucas: There are a lot of artists that I look up to and respect and get a lot of inspiration from; both within and outside of the Korean music scene but I do always try to include a bit of Korean in my songs because I am Korean.

Ineffa Lucas: Although English is more in my comfort zone. I would love to work with some Korean musicians but not anyone specific. I’ve always been a big fan of Beenzino so he would be a dream feature for me. Hopefully one day!

Alicia: You got that!

Alicia: With the interview coming to an end I wanted to say thank you for letting me interview you and I wanted to ask about future plans. I know you mentioned that you have an album coming out this month. Can you tell us more about that?

Ineffa Lucas: Yeah so I have an album coming out ‘Wotecomb’. It comes out on May 23rd! Wotecomb stands for ‘Will the time ever come back’. I want the listeners to interpret it in their own way about their memories and past experiences. Whether it be about past relationships, family, or friends. I just want everyone to listen to it from start to finish and see what they get from it.

Ineffa Lucas: Yeah so that’s coming out on May 23rd! I have a lot of good songs on there that I’m happy with and a lot of amazing features. I also have three music videos coming out.

Ineffa Lucas: So everyone stay tuned for that!
