Jonah Marais: Young and Optimistic in San Francisco

By. Megan Kan

On Tuesday, August 27th, Jonah Marias entered his second show on the Young and  Optimistic Tour in San Francisco. Along with supporting opening acts Sergio Calderon (formerly in Real Life) and Ashley Mehta, both Bay Area born artists, they all greeted fans at The Chapel in San Francisco.

Jonah-formerly a part of WHY DON'T WE, a 5 member boy band since the year 2016-has made many memories around the world with fans singing songs such as ‘8 Letters’ 'unbelievable’ and ‘love back" just to name a few. Now, this singer has journeyed into the beginning of his solo career. On June 28th, 2024, the singer released his first ever solo EP titled “The Jonah Marias Mixtape” with lead single “HEAVEN”, an acoustic pop track that makes his soothing vocals apparent to listeners.

At the show, the singer opened up about paying respect to the memory and journey of being in a band at the beginning of his career, and how much he has learned from his band members and brothers. He spoke about memories that he will never forget, but the struggle of transitioning from being in a group to discovering himself as a solo singer has daunted him from the beginning. The singer opened up the show with “Twisted Lullaby”, a song about comparing himself with what others have said about him to his members and his anxieties about what the world has told him he is as an artist.

The honesty of an artist after passing through these dark moments is a very special full circle moment, and that was something unexpectedly felt at Jonah’s show. Most of us can relate to having a dark moment in a season of life, but when we are able to move on, we have the gift of encouraging others during those moments. The singer also sang some unreleased songs from his EP, some WhyDontWe songs, and cover songs that suited his vocal style-such as an acoustic cover of “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman.

A crowd favorite was when he sang a piano cover of 8 Letters by WhyDon’tWe

Congrats Jonah on your first tour and solo project!
